The essentials
What to know before you bring one home

Breed History
Despite the name, Australian Shepherds were developed in the American West as versatile ranch dogs, prized for their intelligence and herding instinct.
Size & Growth
Standard Australian Shepherds typically reach 40–65 lbs and 18–23 inches at the shoulder by adulthood, with most growth complete by 12–16 months.
Temperament
Loyal, energetic, and highly intelligent. Aussies bond closely with their families and do best with a job to do — they are not a low-energy breed.
Exercise Needs
Plan for a minimum of 1–2 hours of vigorous physical exercise and mental stimulation daily. Under-exercised Aussies can become anxious or destructive.
Training
Start early. Aussies are quick learners and respond best to positive reinforcement, consistency, and early socialization with people, dogs, and new environments.
Shedding & Grooming
Double-coated and seasonal shedders. Expect regular brushing, with heavier shedding during coat blow twice a year.
Choosing a Breeder
Ask to meet the parent dogs, ask about health testing, and expect a breeder who asks you just as many questions back. New Jersey regulates the sale of dogs — including minimum age at sale and the disclosures a buyer is owed — so ask any breeder to confirm in writing how they comply.
Meet them in person
